Royal Jordanian Airlines has taken delivery of its first Airbus A320neo from the aircraft leasing company Avolon. The handover took place at a ceremony in Toulouse, France, and the aircraft is currently en route to the airline's base in Amman. This addition aims to enhance Royal Jordanian's short-haul connectivity.

The arrival of the A320neo marks a significant step for Royal Jordanian as it seeks to modernize its narrowbody fleet and position itself as a key transit hub in the Middle East. The airline plans to expand its fleet size by almost 50% over the coming years, receiving more A320neos and their stretched counterpart, the A321neo.

According to an announcement by Avolon, this is "the first of eight A320neos to be delivered by Avolon over the next 12 months." Current tracking data shows that the plane, registered as JY-RAD and named Jerash after a city in northern Jordan, was flying over northern Greece towards Amman.

Samer Majali, Vice Chairman and CEO of Royal Jordanian Airlines, stated: "The delivery of our first A320neo marks a significant milestone in our fleet modernization strategy. This aircraft, with its advanced technology and enhanced fuel efficiency, will enable us to offer improved services to our passengers while reducing our environmental footprint."

Configured with 180 all-economy seats, JY-RAD is designed for regional operations. However, future deliveries may feature varied cabin configurations including premium layouts with lie-flat beds on some models. Pratt & Whitney will supply engines for both aircraft types.

Reflecting on Royal Jordanian's ambitions as a transit carrier between Europe and Asia, Samer Majali added that the new aircraft "reinforces our role as the preferred carrier connecting the Levant with key cities across the Middle East and Europe." The airline aims to increase its fleet from 24 to 41 aircraft by 2028.
