Today marks the conclusion of Sunwing Airlines' 20-year history as an independent Canadian leisure carrier. WestJet Group has announced that Sunwing is now fully integrated into its mainline operations. The final commercial flight under the Sunwing brand will operate today, after which it will cease to exist as a separate entity.

WestJet's acquisition of Sunwing was first announced in May 2023. This move aimed to strengthen WestJet's presence in Canada's leisure travel market by improving access to low-cost vacation destinations and streamlining operations in overlapping markets. Two years later, this integration process is complete.

The merger expands WestJet’s reach to over 40 leisure destinations across the Caribbean, Mexico, and Central America—markets where Sunwing had established a strong presence through frequent seasonal flights and partnerships with tour operators. Additionally, WestJet gains a stronger foothold in the vacation package market through its subsidiary, Sunwings Vacations.

This integration follows WestJet’s previous consolidations of Swoop and Lynx Air, both completed within recent years. These moves have brought more than 40 aircraft under a single air operator certificate (AOC) and reshaped WestJet's narrowbody fleet structure, which now includes over 130 Boeing 737s.

Alexis von Hoensbroech, Chief Executive Officer of the WestJet Group, commented: "Achieving this milestone is proof of the incredible way our unified team works together and is a clear win for WestJet and our guests; it's also a story of transformation in Canadian aviation."

From May 29 onwards, all customers from Sunwing and WestJet Vacations will fly on services operated by WestJet Airlines. Changes include updates to baggage allowances; passengers are entitled to one personal item and one carry-on at no extra cost while checked baggage must be purchased separately. Onboard services continue with complimentary non-alcoholic drinks and light snacks available but duty-free sales have been discontinued.

Sunwing Airlines launched in November 2005 with flights from Toronto to Santiago de Cuba and became known for connecting Canadian travelers with sun destinations across the Caribbean, Mexico, and Central America. With its full integration into WestJet complete, Sunwing’s legacy as an independent airline concludes today.
