Long Beach Airport and the city's Public Works Department have been recognized for their efforts in preserving local architecture and history. The 37th Annual Long Beach Heritage Preservation Awards, held on May 21, acknowledged their contributions.

Mayor Rex Richardson expressed pride in the recognition, stating, "We are proud to see both the Airport and Public Works departments recognized for their hard work and dedication to preserving our rich history in Long Beach."

The airport received a Rehabilitation Award for restoring its Historic Terminal. The terminal reopened in 2024 after a comprehensive renovation that preserved its architectural features and original WPA artwork. Local historic preservation consultant John Thomas advised on the project.

Originally designed by architects William Horace Austin and Kenneth Smith Wing, the terminal was delayed from opening due to the attack on Pearl Harbor but officially opened in April 1942. It is now a designated Historic Landmark.

Airport Director Cynthia Guidry commented, "Long Beach Airport’s charm comes from its rich history and unique sense of place."

The Public Works Department earned a Preservation Award for restoring the mural "Typical Activities of the Beach and Harbor City" at Harvey Milk Promenade Park. Completed as a WPA project in 1938, this mural underwent repairs in summer 2024.

Public Works Director Eric Lopez remarked, "This mural is a vibrant reflection of Long Beach’s culture and history."

Christopher Hogan, Executive Director of Long Beach Heritage, noted that these awards recognize significant impacts made through historic preservation projects.
