A United Airlines Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft experienced a delay in landing at San Francisco International Airport (SFO) due to a maintenance-related holding pattern. The incident occurred on May 27, 2025, as reported by the San Francisco Chronicle.

The aircraft, registered as N27270, was on flight UA2313 from Juan Santamaria International Airport (SJO) in San Jose, Costa Rica to SFO. A light indicating a potential maintenance issue prompted the flight crew to initiate the holding pattern. This resulted in the plane landing 37 minutes later than scheduled, according to FlightAware.com data.

The Boeing 737 MAX 8 carried 157 passengers and six crew members. A United Airlines spokesperson confirmed that "the aircraft landed safely and customers deplaned normally at the gate." As a precautionary measure, emergency services met the aircraft upon landing.

The plane involved is a relatively new addition to United's fleet, being only 2.7 years old. It can accommodate up to 166 passengers across three classes: business class, economy comfort, and economy class.

Holding patterns are typically used for spacing purposes during congested air traffic or adverse weather conditions. They allow aircraft to maintain safe distances both laterally and vertically while awaiting clearance for landing.

United Airlines operates as a full-service carrier with several hubs including Chicago O'Hare International Airport and San Francisco International Airport among others. The airline was founded in 1931 and continues to serve numerous destinations worldwide.
