Manchester Airport is undergoing significant changes as part of the £1.3 billion Manchester Airport Transformation Program (MAN-TP). The airport, which features three passenger terminals and a cargo terminal, serves flights to over 200 destinations globally.

The transformation program's initial phases have already led to considerable expansions. Phase 2 aims to improve passenger experiences and modernize facilities further. As part of this initiative, CU Phosco has upgraded the apron lighting at Terminals 1 and 3. This upgrade is designed to reduce energy costs associated with lighting while complying with CAP168 regulations.

CU Phosco implemented a solution that includes 238 FL800D-2 floodlights on 53 bespoke replacement lantern carriages for the apron lighting upgrade. These floodlights are known for their performance and reliability and were positioned strategically to ensure optimal illumination across all apron areas. This setup not only meets CAP168 requirements but also aligns with the airport's energy efficiency goals.

The FL800D-2 floodlights offer various optical distribution options and elevation angles, allowing for customized luminaire photometric output tailored to meet project specifications. Features such as full azimuth rotation, tilt functions, and built-in drivers provide an efficient lighting solution.

CU Phosco’s Contracts Division provided a complete turnkey service from initial surveys through design, manufacturing, and installation of the lantern carriages. The successful implementation resulted in apron lighting that exceeded CAP168 requirements while achieving a substantial 65% reduction in energy costs, supporting Manchester Airport's sustainability objectives.

The new lighting enhances visibility on aprons with minimal glare, ensuring safe operations for pilots and ground personnel. Additionally, the spectral distribution of FL800D-2 allows accurate identification of aircraft markings, enhancing safety measures further.

Cally Revell, senior project manager at Capital Delivery MAG (Manchester Airport Group), stated: “We are proud to connect passengers in the North with over 200 destinations worldwide and are investing in our facilities to ensure we continue to offer a high-quality service. We are pleased with the results of the work that CU Phosco has undertaken on apron lighting, which means we now have a more efficient lighting system that is cost effective but meets all regulatory requirements.”
