Delta Air Lines, one of the United States' major legacy carriers and a founding member of the SkyTeam alliance, has been recognized for its simple yet effective aircraft livery. The airline's planes are known for their white fuselages, dark blue tails and engines, and red triangular logos. However, in 2015, Delta made a notable change to its livery by adding its name in large white capital letters to the underside of its aircraft.

This change was aimed at enhancing brand visibility from below as similar dark blue belly designs were also used by other airlines like British Airways. "According to the Delta Flight Museum, this change took place in 2015," marking a decade since Delta's planes began sporting this distinctive feature. The alteration also includes the company's 'Onward and Upward' logo in white.

The initiative to add the name and logo was led by Adam Pinsley from Delta’s Marketing Department. He emphasized that "brand and aircraft recognition shouldn’t end when Delta’s jets leave an airport." According to Pinsley, "the strategically placed logo serves to further Delta’s brand visibility and awareness beyond the airfield."

In 2014, Jan's Aviation reported that nearly all aircraft in Delta's fleet would receive this update, except those with special liveries. It was uncertain whether regional aircraft operated under the Delta Connection brand would include these features due to space constraints.

The first aircraft types to receive this new design were Airbus A330s and Boeing 737-900ERs. Currently, according to data from ch-aviation, Delta operates a mainline fleet of 997 aircraft comprising various narrowbody and widebody models from both Airbus and Boeing.

Several other airlines have also adopted painted designs on their aircraft bellies. Emirates paints its bellies bright red with its name written in white for easy identification. Southwest Airlines incorporates a small heart logo on its blue-painted bellies as part of its branding strategy.

Throughout its history, which dates back to 1925 as Huff Daland Dusters before becoming Delta Air Lines in 1929, the carrier has seen numerous changes in livery design. Notable schemes include polished metal designs in the mid-20th century and more modern iterations like 'Colors In Motion' at the turn of the century.

In addition to standard liveries, Delta has introduced special paint schemes over the years for events such as the Olympic Games or causes like breast cancer awareness.
