Boeing 777X | Wikipedia

The Boeing 777X series, consisting of the 777-8 and 777-9 models, represents the latest evolution in long-range, wide-body jetliners. These aircraft are part of Boeing's strategy to maintain its market share in the long-range segment. The 777X program was introduced in November 2013 with two main variants: the shorter 777-8 and the larger 777-9.

Boeing Commercial Airplanes launched this initiative following the success of its earlier 777 models. The assembly is planned at Boeing's Everett facility in Washington. The 777-8 can accommodate up to 395 passengers and cover a distance of up to 8,745 nautical miles, while the larger 777-9 can seat up to 426 passengers with a range of approximately 7,285 nautical miles.

The first model developed was the 777-9, which had its maiden flight in January 2020. Initial deliveries were expected by 2022 but have been delayed until at least 2026 due to various setbacks. As per last year's data, Boeing has received orders for over 500 units across both variants.

Boeing describes the new series as "the world's largest and most efficient twin-engine jet," promising significant improvements in fuel efficiency and operating costs compared to competitors. It also boasts enhanced cabin features derived from innovations seen in Boeing's Dreamliner series.

The GE Aerospace GE9X engines power these jets. According to GE Aerospace, "The GE9X is the largest and most powerful commercial aircraft engine ever built," designed specifically for this new family of jets to provide better fuel efficiency and lower emissions.

Despite delays caused by factors such as pandemic-related disruptions and supply chain issues, Boeing continues rigorous testing on these aircraft. Certification tests are ongoing with an aim for service entry soon after deliveries commence.

Lufthansa will be among the first airlines to receive deliveries once they begin. Meanwhile, Etihad Airways has placed significant orders for these aircraft as part of their fleet expansion plans.
