Boeing 737-600 | Simple Flying

The remaining Boeing 737-600 aircraft are still operational, primarily under the airlines Air Algérie and Amentum leasing. Originally, 69 units were produced, but only eleven remain in active service. Air Algérie operates five of these aircraft as part of its diverse fleet, which includes Boeing 767s, Airbus A330s, and ATR-72s. The airline's hub is Houari Boumediene Airport in Algiers, serving a network that spans North America, the Middle East, Europe, and Africa.

Air Algérie transitioned to a limited private corporation in 1997 and initiated routes to Beijing in 2009 after opening flights to Montreal in 2007. As reported by Paul Hartley from Simple Flying, Air Algérie has plans for fleet renewal that may soon phase out the -600 models.

FPG Amentum manages the other six Boeing 737-600 aircraft. Based in Ireland, FPG Amentum is an independent aircraft lessor offering financing solutions for airlines worldwide. It provides used -600s sourced from Air China and China Southwest Airlines.

Jack Gucker from Boeing highlighted the launch of the first -600: "This is a very exciting day for us. We thank SAS for having the confidence and vision to become the launch customer of the 737-600." Despite initial optimism, demand for this model was low compared to its counterparts like the -700 series.

Many former operators have retired their fleets or repurposed parts for other uses. Companies like Aventure Aviation have acquired some units for part-out purposes.

The market has shifted towards newer models such as the Boeing 737 MAX and Airbus A320neo due to their improved fuel efficiency and capacity. The future of existing Boeing 737-600s seems uncertain with possible niche market applications or replacement on the horizon.
