Around half of the over 1,000 Boeing 757s produced remain in service worldwide. Most of these operational aircraft are in the United States, with many now serving as freighters. Delta Air Lines and United Airlines are the largest operators of passenger Boeing 757s, with 110 and 61 aircraft respectively.

The Boeing 757, known for its elongated shape as the "flying pencil," ended production in 2004 after delivering 1,049 units. Despite their age, these planes continue to fly as airlines look for replacements. According to Cirium data, four airlines will operate the shortest Boeing 757 routes in 2025: Delta Air Lines, United Airlines, Azur Air, and Fly Khiva.

Fly Khiva is set to operate the shortest route at just 118 miles from Namangan Airport to Tashkent International Airport in Uzbekistan. This small Uzbek airline offers flights within Uzbekistan and to leisure destinations like Georgia and Egypt. Delta will operate a return flight from Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta to Birmingham–Shuttlesworth International Airport at an average distance of 134 miles.

Icelandair is replacing its fleet with Airbus A321s while Germany's Condor plans retirement after the winter season of 2025/2026. TUI Airways retired its fleet in 2021. Delta and United are gradually reducing their fleets; Delta has decreased from operating 205 Boeing 757s to having only 110 remaining.

United operates flights between Newark Liberty and Boston at exactly 200 miles each way. Other short routes include Newark to Washington Dulles (213 miles) and Atlanta to Nashville (214 miles). Azur Air operates a one-way flight from Maun Airport in Botswana to Livingstone Airport in Zambia.

Delta operates all flights between Atlanta and Charleston International Airport at a distance of 259 miles. The busiest short route is between Atlanta and Jacksonville with over 3,500 flights scheduled for the year.

United Airlines operates six flights from New Orleans International Airport to Houston Intercontinental averaging at about 305 miles. Delta also runs several daily flights between Atlanta and Memphis International Airport averaging around ten per day on this route.

The Los Angeles-San Francisco route sees both United and Delta operating multiple daily flights averaging a distance of about 337 miles each way.

While most Boeing 757 operations occur within the U.S., they serve both long transatlantic routes as well as shorter domestic ones. Despite ending production due to decreased demand post-9/11, discussions continue about a potential replacement called the New Midsize Airplane or Boeing 797.
