Edelweiss Airlines | Edelweiss flight

On June 2, Edelweiss, a Swiss leisure airline, launched its inaugural flight from Zurich to Seattle. This marks the first time Edelweiss has flown this route, following the return of SAS from Copenhagen on May 21. SAS had not operated flights to Seattle since 2009. With these additions, there are now 12 passenger airlines connecting Washington State's airport with Europe, the highest number since 2023. Alaska Airlines is set to join this list next year with its first route to Rome.

Seattle-Tacoma International Airport now offers nonstop flights to 11 European airports for the first time. These destinations include Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Dublin, Frankfurt, Helsinki, Istanbul (on the European side of the Bosphorus), Keflavik, London Heathrow, Munich, Paris CDG, and Zurich. According to Cirium Diio data, up to 18 daily flights will depart from Seattle for Europe during the summer.

Edelweiss operates twice-weekly summer seasonal flights from Zurich until September 15 using a 314-seat Airbus A340-300. This aircraft is unique as it is increasingly uncommon and will be the only A340 operating in Seattle this summer. However, Lufthansa plans to use this type in winter. The Zurich-Seattle route ranks as the world's 13th-longest A340 route.

Seattle is Edelweiss' fourth US destination after Denver, Las Vegas, and Tampa. The airline aims to attract local passengers who traveled between Zurich and Seattle last year. With direct flights and promotional efforts, traffic is expected to increase by at least 30%. Passengers can also connect in Zurich to SWISS-operated destinations such as Rome (starting next year), Barcelona, Athens, Venice, and Prague.

The table below summarizes available flights in July 2025:

- Aer Lingus: Dublin (daily A330-200)

- Air France: Paris CDG (daily A350-900)

- British Airways: London Heathrow (double daily 777-300ER and 787-10)

- Condor: Frankfurt (daily A330-900)

- Delta: Amsterdam (double daily A330-900), London Heathrow (daily A330-900), Paris CDG (daily A330-900)

- Edelweiss: Zurich (twice-weekly A340-300)

- Finnair: Helsinki (five weekly A330-300)

- Icelandair: Keflavik (triple daily A321LR; all-A321LR starting June 4)

- Lufthansa: Frankfurt (daily A350-900), Munich (three weekly A350-900)

- SAS: Copenhagen (five weekly A350-900)

- Turkish Airlines: Istanbul (10 weekly A350-900; occasionally using a 787-9)

- Virgin Atlantic: London Heathrow (daily A330-900)

In recent years American Airlines ceased operations at London Heathrow between 2021 and 2023 due to their transatlantic joint venture partner British Airways taking over that market. Norwegian discontinued its service from London Gatwick in 2019 due to financial losses leading them to end all long-haul operations. Thomas Cook and Eurowings also ended their services from Manchester and Cologne respectively in that same year.

Air Tahiti Nui operated a twice-weekly service from Papeete via Seattle to Paris CDG until January 2025 but withdrew to consolidate operations at Los Angeles for cost efficiency reasons.
