Peter Cerda Regional Vice President, The Americas | International Air Transport Association - IATA

GOL and TAP Air Portugal have adopted the International Air Transport Association's (IATA) FuelIS platform to enhance their fuel management strategies. This move aims to deliver long-term fuel savings and improve environmental performance by benchmarking fuel efficiency against industry standards.

Nick Careen, IATA Senior Vice President Operations, Safety and Security, emphasized the importance of effective fuel management for airlines. "Fuel management is key for airlines. Depending on the prevailing price of jet fuel, it generally accounts for 25-30% of the cost base," he said. Careen highlighted that as airlines work towards decarbonization, managing carbon costs will become increasingly important.

The FuelIS platform provides airlines with valuable insights into specific markets, regions, countries, and fleet types based on real operational data from over 220 airlines worldwide. This data covers more than 8 million flights annually. The platform helps airlines develop and track fuel strategies by integrating seamlessly with IATA's systems.

Since 2005, IATA has partnered with global airlines to identify potential annual reductions in fuel consumption totaling 4.76 million tonnes, which equates to $3.8 billion in savings each year.

TAP Air Portugal CEO Luís Rodrigues noted the significance of managing fuel consumption due to its cost implications and role in decarbonization efforts. "Every kilogram of fuel saved counts," he stated, adding that FuelIS supports a responsive fuel strategy amid market changes.

Similarly, GOL COO Albert Pérez recognized the competitive advantage gained through efficient fuel management using FuelIS. He remarked that joining FuelIS aligns with GOL's commitment to improving operations and focusing on cost reduction.
