Federal Express Corporation has entered into an agreement with Neste to secure over three million gallons of blended sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) for delivery at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). This purchase is part of FedEx's strategy to reduce aviation emissions and represents the largest SAF acquisition by a U.S. cargo airline at LAX.

Karen Blanks Ellis, Chief Sustainability Officer and Vice President of Environmental Affairs at FedEx, stated, "Procuring SAF is an important component of our aviation emissions-reduction strategy in the coming years, and we are pleased to have executed a deal with Neste to begin using this fuel in our air operations."

Richard Smith, Chief Operating Officer, International, and CEO of Airline at FedEx, emphasized the significance of this step: "As the world’s preeminent express transportation company, our initial U.S. deployment of this fuel advances our sustainability goals and bolsters the aviation industry’s efforts to source and use more SAF."

Carl Nyberg from Neste expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration: “Neste is excited to work with FedEx and support their ambitious goal of reaching carbon-neutral operations by 2040 with our SAF.”

This initiative builds on FedEx's history of promoting sustainable aviation technologies. The company has previously collaborated with Boeing on ecoDemonstrator flight tests using 100% SAF. Additionally, FedEx continues efforts in fleet modernization and fuel conservation to achieve its emission reduction targets.

Sustainable aviation fuel offers a lower-emission alternative to conventional jet fuels. It is made from renewable waste materials like used cooking oil and animal fat waste. Although production is increasing globally, SAF accounted for less than 1% of all jet fuel production in 2024.

FedEx is also implementing various sustainability initiatives in China as part of its goal for carbon-neutral operations by 2040. These include vehicle electrification, sustainable infrastructure projects like solar arrays in Beijing, eco-driving training programs, digital tools for tracking emissions data, environmental protection activities, workplace sustainability programs, and material upcycling efforts.

More information about FedEx's sustainability strategy can be found on their website.
