Alaska Airlines has announced the launch of nonstop service between Seattle and Rome, set to begin in May 2026. This new route will be the only direct connection from the Pacific Northwest to Italy. The announcement was made on X.

According to Alaska Airlines, the service will operate four times weekly on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays. This route represents Alaska Airlines' first transatlantic service and will utilize Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft, equipped with 34 business class seats and 266 economy class seats.

As reported by Aviation Week, this development is part of Alaska Airlines' strategy to position Seattle as a global gateway. The airline aims to serve at least a dozen long-haul destinations by 2030. The acquisition of Hawaiian Airlines in late 2024 enabled Alaska to access wide-body aircraft necessary for such international routes. Rome was selected due to its status as the largest unserved European destination from Seattle, with nearly 44,000 two-way passengers recorded in 2024.

According to The Points Guy, the new route will introduce Alaska Airlines' flagship international experience aboard the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, featuring an all-new business-class product. This initiative marks a significant transition for Alaska from being primarily a domestic airline to becoming a global competitor. Flights are expected to go on sale in fall 2025, with a new loyalty program for both Alaska and Hawaiian Airlines anticipated in August 2025.

Founded in 1932 and headquartered in Seattle, Washington, Alaska Airlines is currently the fifth-largest airline in the United States by passenger traffic. It operates an extensive network across North America and now Europe with over 1,200 daily flights. As a member of the Oneworld alliance since 2021, Alaska continues its international expansion through new partnerships and route launches.
