Airlines operate two types of flights: seasonal and year-round services. Seasonal flights target peak travel demand, while year-round services cater to consistent passenger flows. Legacy carriers have increasingly embraced seasonal routes following the COVID-19 pandemic.

United Airlines, a full-service carrier founded in 1931 and part of the Star Alliance, is among those expanding their seasonal offerings. United's CEO Scott Kirby oversees operations from multiple hubs across North America, including Chicago O'Hare International Airport and Los Angeles International Airport.

Seasonal flights differ from year-round services in that they operate only during specific high-demand periods. For example, summer sees increased flights from the U.S. to European destinations like Athens International Airport due to tourist demand. Winter routes often include flights from the Northeast U.S. to Florida or ski destinations such as Jackson Hole International Airport.

For airlines like United, filling premium cabins with high-spending travelers is crucial for profitability. Business travelers consistently fill these seats throughout the year, whereas vacationers typically drive demand for seasonal routes.

American Airlines has also adjusted its network by extending seasonal routes to European cities such as Athens, Barcelona, and Naples. This move aligns with a broader trend of launching new seasonal services post-pandemic.

The profitability of a seasonal flight depends on sufficient passenger demand and willingness to pay higher prices for nonstop service convenience. There must also be enough premium cabin demand from non-business travelers.

A notable example of a recently launched seasonal service is American Airlines' nonstop route from Chicago-O’Hare International Airport to Naples Airport in Italy. This route targets a specific market segment seeking convenience and premium experiences during peak summer months.

Since the pandemic, airlines have launched more diverse seasonal services connecting major U.S. hubs with lesser-known destinations like Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, and Nuuk, Greenland. This strategy aims to stimulate air travel demand by offering new convenient options.

Changes in business travel patterns have led airlines to adapt their strategies for serving premium ticket holders traveling for work combined with leisure trips ("bleisure"). Shifting customer preferences towards unique leisure destinations have also influenced airline decisions post-pandemic.

Gen Z and Millennial travelers show interest in off-the-beaten-path destinations not traditionally served by large carriers. The appeal of "instagrammable" locations has prompted airlines to open new routes catering to this demographic's preferences.
