A new short film focusing on the role of marine plants in combating plastic pollution is now available for passengers flying with Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines. This initiative coincides with World Oceans Month, reflecting both airlines' dedication to environmental sustainability.

The film, "Seaweed Stories," narrated by Forest Whitaker and directed by Jake Sumner, highlights the potential of marine plants to address plastic pollution while preserving ocean ecosystems. The airlines aim to engage travelers with this message as they explore destinations within their network.

Alaska Airlines has been a pioneer in environmental initiatives, being the first U.S. airline to eliminate single-use plastic stir straws and citrus picks onboard in 2018. This effort was part of a collaboration with Lonely Whale, setting industry standards for reducing plastic waste. In 2019, they furthered this commitment by encouraging passengers to bring reusable water bottles onboard.

In addition to these efforts, Alaska Airlines has partnered with a Seattle-based startup focused on waste reduction, recycling over 17 pounds of hard-to-process items from flights.

Hawaiian Airlines shares similar commitments to sustainability. They are phasing out single-use plastics from onboard services and have introduced the first certified carbon-neutral amenity kit made from recycled materials. Hawaiian Airlines promotes sustainable tourism by educating travelers on responsible practices that protect natural resources and local communities.
