Passengers on a Spirit Airlines flight at Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport were evacuated Thursday due to a bomb threat. The incident occurred as Flight NK2145 was preparing for its 07:00 departure to Los Angeles International Airport. Law enforcement responded promptly, and all passengers disembarked without incident.

The Wayne County Airport Authority received the threat just before the plane's departure, leading to an emergency response by law enforcement and the TSA. Passengers were deplaned and transported back to the terminal while bomb disposal experts searched the aircraft with K-9 units. No explosives were found, allowing the flight to eventually depart at 13:09 local time, arriving in Los Angeles over six hours late.

A spokesperson for Spirit Airlines confirmed the nature of the threat and praised law enforcement's quick action: "Law enforcement was requested to meet Spirit Airlines flight 2145 prior to departure from Detroit due to a security issue. The incident was confirmed to be a bomb threat, and with the rapid assistance of authorities, all guests were safely deplaned and transported back to the terminal."

This event is part of a series of similar threats this year that have disrupted flights across various airlines. Notable incidents include American Airlines flights affected in February by false threats both domestically and internationally, Allegiant Air facing an evacuation in April due to a note found on board, and United Airlines having a return flight after another false alarm in May.

The penalties for making such threats are severe; individuals can face prison sentences along with financial restitution obligations. An Alaska Airlines passenger who made a similar threat in 2023 was sentenced recently.

The aircraft involved in Thursday’s incident is one of Spirit’s newest Airbus A321neos, delivered just two weeks ago. Despite expanding its fleet with new models like this one, Spirit has faced financial challenges leading it to reduce its fleet size significantly following Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings last year.

Spirit continues adjusting its operations amid these challenges while dealing with broader industry issues such as tariffs affecting aircraft deliveries from Europe.
