American Airlines Boeing 787-9 | Official Website

An American Airlines Boeing 787-9 was redirected from its intended destination of Naples, Italy, to Rome due to operational constraints. The aircraft departed from Philadelphia on June 2 and was forced to divert mid-flight as Naples International Airport cannot accommodate larger widebody aircraft like the 787-9.

The flight, AA780, left Philadelphia International Airport later than scheduled and diverted to Rome's Leonardo da Vinci Fiumicino Airport without entering a holding pattern. The aircraft landed in Rome at 9:42 local time after turning away from Naples at around 26,000 feet.

Following the diversion, the aircraft returned to the United States on June 3, flying from Rome to Chicago O'Hare International Airport as part of a regularly scheduled service. The plane landed in Chicago at approximately 14:50 local time.

American Airlines had been operating flights between Philadelphia and Naples using the smaller Boeing 787-8 since relaunching its seasonal services on May 5. However, this incident marked an exception with the use of a larger variant. Naples is classified as an ICAO code 4D airport and cannot accept larger category 9 aircraft like the Boeing 787-9 due to differences in fuselage length despite having identical wingspans.

The diversion inconvenienced passengers who needed alternative transportation arrangements to reach their final destination in Naples. Since American Airlines is not an EU carrier, European Union compensation rules did not apply in this situation.

Flight data indicated that ITA Airways offered limited commercial options between Rome and Naples on June 3 with four departures available after the diversion occurred.
