Wizz Air is set to increase its capacity by approximately 20% in the year leading up to March 2026, despite facing challenges with a portion of its fleet being grounded due to Pratt & Whitney GTF engine issues. The European low-cost airline revealed these plans alongside its fiscal year 2025 results on June 5, which indicated a significant decline in profits.

The airline's CEO, József Váradi, commented on the situation: “We emerged stronger, wiser, and better prepared… We will not relent on defending the ultra-low cost business model, delivering profitable growth and ultimately stakeholder value.”

Wizz Air ended FY25 with a net profit of €213.9 million ($243.7 million), marking a decrease of 41.5% from the previous year. Operating profit also fell by 61.7%, amounting to €167.5 million ($190.8 million). These declines were largely attributed to the grounding of up to 42 aircraft due to engine issues.

To counteract these challenges and improve profitability, Wizz Air is revising its network strategy by eliminating unprofitable routes and concentrating on mature markets while increasing aircraft utilization. The carrier plans to move operations towards lower-cost secondary airports over the next three years.

According to Wizz Air's latest financial results, there has been a shift away from speculative growth towards consolidation in established markets. Romania, Poland, and Italy are expected to experience significant capacity increases as part of this strategy.

The airline anticipates expanding its Romanian fleet by 28%, with similar expansions planned for Poland (24%) and Italy (21%). Additionally, Wizz Air intends to open a new base in Yerevan, Armenia in October 2025 and expand operations at Bucharest Baneasa airport.

Despite ongoing engine issues affecting some of its fleet, Wizz Air continues with its expansion plans by adding new aircraft. During FY25, it received 26 new Airbus A321neo planes and expects further deliveries in FY26 that will bring its total fleet size to 263 aircraft by March 2026.

Wizz Air holds firm orders for additional A321neos and A321XLRs and aims for a fleet size of 281 aircraft by March 2027. With an average fleet age of just 4.7 years as of March 2025, Wizz maintains one of the youngest fleets among major European carriers.
