American Airlines has announced the suspension of six transatlantic routes for the upcoming winter season, citing lower demand for European travel during this period. The airline will redirect its capacity towards South America, where there is higher demand during the colder months in the United States.

The routes affected include New York (JFK) to Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG), Dallas Fort/Worth (DFW) to Frankfurt (FRA), Philadelphia (PHL) to Zurich (ZRH), New York (JFK) to Milan Malpensa (MXP), Charlotte (CLT) to Munich (MUC), and New York (JFK) to Madrid (MAD). The longest suspension will be on the JFK-CDG route, from January 6, 2025, to March 4, 2025.

According to Cirium data, other suspensions will last less than a month. For example, the PHL-ZRH route will be suspended from January 5 until January 29, 2026. Similarly, the JFK-MXP route will be temporarily halted from January 5 until January 29, 2026.

In response to questions about whether these changes are related to Boeing 787 delivery delays experienced earlier this year, American Airlines clarified that "these adjustments are not based on previously reported Boeing 787 delivery delays." Instead, they are part of a regular adjustment based on seasonal demand shifts.

Previously in January 2025, American Airlines had adjusted its schedule due to ongoing Boeing 787 Dreamliner delivery delays. At that time, it stated: “American is adjusting service on certain routes in summer 2025 to ensure we are able to re-accommodate customers on affected flights.” The airline currently awaits the delivery of 27 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners.
