More than 300 quality assurance workers at ZeniMax Media, a subsidiary of Microsoft, have reached a tentative agreement with the company. This marks a significant development in the U.S. video game industry as it is the first contract of its kind.

Christy Hoffman, General Secretary of UNI Global Union, commented on the agreement: "This agreement sets a new benchmark for respecting workers’ rights in an industry defined by light-speed change." She added that it demonstrates video game workers' readiness to organize and lead toward a fairer industry.

The Communications Workers of America (CWA) represents these workers in Maryland and Texas. The deal follows nearly two years of negotiations and aligns with a labor neutrality agreement signed with Microsoft in 2022.

Key components of the proposed contract include wage increases, new minimum salaries, protections against unjust termination, and formal recognition of QA workers' roles in game development. It also incorporates an agreed framework on using artificial intelligence in the workplace.

ZeniMax Media is known for franchises like The Elder Scrolls and Doom. In 2023, its employees formed Microsoft's first certified union within its video game division. Since then, over 2,000 Microsoft game workers have joined CWA under an agreement that supports unionization without employer interference.

CWA President Claude Cummings Jr. stated: "Workers in the video game industry are demonstrating once again that collective power works." He highlighted how this agreement illustrates what can be achieved when workers unite for improved conditions.

The contract will proceed to members for ratification, with voting expected to conclude by June 20.
