Christy Hoffman General Secretary | UNI Global Union

UNI Global Union has issued a statement condemning the arrest of David Huerta, President of SEIU California and SEIU United Service Workers West (USWW). Huerta was detained while observing and documenting an ICE raid in Los Angeles. According to UNI Global Union, Huerta was exercising his First Amendment rights as a community observer during the incident.

The union expressed concern that Huerta's arrest represents an attempt to silence labor leaders and reflects negatively on holding power accountable. UNI Global Union demands the immediate release of David Huerta and others detained under similar circumstances.

David Huerta began his organizing career with Justice for Janitors, a campaign advocating for immigrant janitors across the U.S. This movement aimed at improving working conditions and achieving respect for low-wage workers, starting in Los Angeles.

In a statement, UNI Global Union said: "Like the janitors who laid down in the streets of Los Angeles in the 1990s demanding recognition and rights, Huerta stood peacefully this week with today’s immigrant workers—many of whom face renewed threats of detention, deportation, and family separation."

The organization also criticized the use of force against demonstrators. "We denounce the use of tear gas, pepper spray, and militarized police tactics against unarmed demonstrators," they stated. They called on U.S. authorities to respect worker rights, particularly those within immigrant communities who have contributed significantly to the American economy without full protection.

"Justice for Janitors taught us that when workers rise together, history bends toward justice. David Huerta continues that fight," UNI Global Union affirmed their support for him.
