Breeze Airways | Wikipedia

The Department of Transportation (DOT) has granted Breeze Airways approval to commence international flights. This decision allows the airline to fly to countries with which the United States has an Open Skies agreement. The US State Department notes that it has over 130 such partners, starting with the Netherlands in 1992.

Breeze Airways' new authorization permits scheduled international flights carrying passengers, cargo, and mail between the US and nations with a valid Open Skies agreement or a Multilateral Agreement on the Liberalization of International Air Transport (MALIAT). The exemption also applies to any future agreements.

Effective from June 6 until June 6, 2027, or until 90 days after a final action on Breeze's certificate application, Breeze can operate these flights. The DOT stated that granting this request aligns with public interest and does not constitute major regulatory action. "We may amend, modify, or revoke the authority granted in this Notice at any time without hearing at our discretion," said the DOT.

Breeze filed for approval on May 21 and had its first commercial flight on May 27, 2021. It sought indefinite permission for international routes. Previously approved for operations between the US and Mexico, Breeze also conducted charters to the Bahamas and Cayman Islands.

However, Breeze currently lacks Extended Range Operation with Two-Engine Airplanes (ETOPS) approval, restricting it from routes beyond a relief airport within 60 minutes. Its international operations are expected to mirror its domestic services in scope.

Breeze plans to use Airbus A220-300 aircraft for these flights. Although specific routes have not been disclosed, potential destinations could include popular leisure spots near secondary cities served by Breeze across Florida and other locations.

According to Cirium's Diio Mi airline planning tool data, Cancun ranks as one of the busiest international destinations from the US with numerous weekly departures.
