Southwest Airlines has expanded its network with the launch of six new transcontinental routes from Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport. On June 5, the airline inaugurated flights to Long Beach, Ontario, Portland, San Francisco, San Jose, and Seattle. These additions make Baltimore the fourth-busiest airport in Southwest's network based on daily aircraft movements.

The airline's expansion includes two destinations—Long Beach and Ontario—that have not previously had nonstop service from Baltimore. Notably, this marks the first time Ontario has had direct flights from the Greater D.C. area. "It is even more significant than this," according to Cirium Diio data and US Department of Transportation information.

The new routes contribute to a total of 77 routes served by Southwest from Baltimore in June, which will increase to 78 later in the year with seasonal Los Cabos flights resuming in November and December.

Each of the six new routes offers daily service. Flights to Portland resume after being last operated by Southwest between 2014 and 2019. The San Francisco route introduces competition with United Airlines for the first time since Alaska Airlines withdrew in 2019.

At 2,135 nautical miles each way, the Baltimore-San Francisco route becomes Southwest's longest within the mainland United States. However, it ranks as only their 13th-longest systemwide when including Hawaiian destinations.

Southwest's recent operational changes include overnight return flights on these new West Coast routes back to Baltimore. This shift follows suggestions by Elliott Management aimed at enhancing productivity and revenue while cutting costs.

The overnight schedule aligns with connecting passengers to early morning departures from Baltimore. The flight times vary slightly across different days of the week but consistently arrive early in Maryland for optimal connectivity.

Overall, these strategic expansions and scheduling changes signify a shift in Southwest’s operational approach as it adapts to evolving market demands and seeks improved financial outcomes.
