American Airlines has requested a temporary dormancy waiver from the United States Department of Transportation (DOT) for its Cuba-bound routes. This request follows the Trump administration's recent announcement imposing partial travel restrictions between the US and Cuba, which came into effect today.
The restrictions are part of broader measures affecting 12 countries, with an additional seven, including Cuba, facing partial entry limitations based on visa requirements. American Airlines anticipates a decrease in demand due to these changes and seeks to adjust its operations accordingly.
"Market conditions have presented deeper challenges to the rebound of US-Cuba passenger demand," American Airlines stated. "In light of these ongoing challenges and for the purpose of more efficiently deploying its scarce aircraft, American seeks to supplement the temporary suspension of a limited number of its US–Cuba services for the remainder of the summer 2025 season."
