Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC) hosts a unique operation by United Airlines, featuring a diverse fleet of aircraft types across various routes. Although United accounts for only a small portion of the airport's traffic, it conducts approximately 650 round-trip flights monthly. This operation is notable due to the variety of aircraft and destinations involved.

United Airlines operates over 1,000 aircraft globally, serving nearly 400 destinations. Despite its vast network, Salt Lake City's operations stand out because they deviate from the typical strategy of consolidating similar jet types at specific locations for efficiency. At SLC, United employs nine different types of aircraft on seven routes.

The aircraft operating from SLC include models such as the Bombardier Canadair Regional Jet CRJ-700 and the Embraer ERJ-175. Other models in use are Airbus A319 and A320, along with Boeing 737 variants including MAX 8 and MAX 9. This variety allows flexibility if one type faces grounding issues.

Destinations served from SLC range from nearby Denver to more distant cities like Newark and Washington D.C., providing passengers with diverse travel options. Patrick Quayle, United’s Senior Vice President of Global Network Planning and Alliances, highlighted United's expansive network: "No other airline gives customers nonstop access to as many unique international destinations and experiences from the U.S. as United."

In addition to expanding its destination offerings, United has made significant strides in customer service and sustainability efforts. The airline set a record by carrying almost 174 million passengers in 2024 and announced partnerships to enhance onboard connectivity through SpaceX's Starlink Wi-Fi service.

Overall, while SLC may be just one part of United's extensive operations, its distinctive approach provides insights into how airlines can maintain operational resilience through diversity in their fleets.
