An IndiGo Airbus A321-251NX, operating as flight 6E 2142 from Delhi to Srinagar, encountered a severe hailstorm during its approach to Srinagar Airport on May 21, 2025. The aircraft sustained visible damage to its nose cone but landed safely. All passengers and crew were evacuated without injury.

IndiGo stated that the hailstorm was unexpected. "The flight and cabin crew followed established protocol and the aircraft landed safely in Srinagar. The airport team attended to the customers after arrival of the aircraft, prioritising their wellbeing and comfort," the airline said.

Images online show damage to the aircraft’s radome, which houses weather radar equipment. This type of damage requires inspection and maintenance before the aircraft can return to service.

The airline confirmed that necessary inspections and maintenance will be conducted before further operations.

Severe weather events like hailstorms challenge flight operations, especially during approach phases where flexibility is limited. Aviation safety experts note that modern aircraft are designed for extreme conditions, but protocol adherence and effective crew response are crucial for safety.

No delays or disruptions occurred at Srinagar Airport following the incident.

This event highlights the importance of crew training and adherence to safety protocols. Aircraft in regions with rapidly changing weather conditions rely on advanced forecasting systems and crew vigilance to mitigate risks.

IndiGo, India’s largest airline by fleet size and market share, has maintained a strong safety record and reiterated its commitment to passenger safety in its response.

As weather patterns become more unpredictable, incidents like this highlight ongoing challenges airlines face in balancing efficiency and safety in daily operations.
