Flights at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport were temporarily grounded on June 14, 2025, due to a suspected bomb threat. The airport closed both runways as a precautionary measure but has since resumed full operations.

The incident involved an Alaska Airlines Embraer E175 operating as flight 2123 by Horizon Air, which was taxiing towards the runway when it was stopped. "A passenger allegedly made a direct threat to the safety of the aircraft by speaking to a flight attendant during taxiing," according to The Seattle Times. The Port of Seattle Police and Fire Departments responded promptly, isolating the aircraft on runway 16R while conducting an investigation. Specific details of the threat remain undisclosed.

The situation led to significant disruptions, with data from FlightAware.com indicating that 525 flights were delayed or canceled. Most affected were Alaska Airlines flights, with 225 delays and 17 cancellations reported.

This incident is part of a broader trend of bomb threats affecting air travel. On June 6, 2025, another threat led to the evacuation of a Spirit Airlines Airbus A321 bound for Los Angeles. No explosives were found in that case either.

Passengers making such threats face severe consequences. In May 2025, an Alaska Airlines passenger received nearly two years in prison for a bomb threat made in July 2023. According to the United States Department of Justice (DOJ), Brandon L. Scott was sentenced for his actions on an Alaska Airlines flight from Atlanta to Seattle and ordered to pay restitution.

Unruly passenger incidents have been rising, with over 2,102 cases reported in 2024 alone according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). As of June 8, 2025, there have been 699 reports this year.
