Air India announced on X that flight AI171 from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick was involved in an accident shortly after takeoff.

According to CBS News, flight AI171 departed Ahmedabad at 13:38 IST on June 12, 2025, carrying 242 passengers and crew aboard a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner destined for London Gatwick. Shortly after takeoff, the aircraft issued a mayday call and crashed into a residential area near B.J. Medical College in Ahmedabad, with only one survivor reported. The incident occurred approximately 50–60 seconds after liftoff.

As reported by AP News, on board were 169 Indian nationals, 53 British nationals, one Canadian national, and seven Portuguese nationals, representing 242 individuals including 12 crew members. The crash also impacted the ground, with the aircraft striking a medical college and causing further casualties.

The Guardian reported that emergency services have transported injured individuals to nearby hospitals while rescue teams continue ground operations focused on identification, DNA testing, and recovery. UK consular support has been activated for the 53 British nationals, with specialised accident investigators from the UK also assisting the Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) in the ongoing probe.

Air India, founded in 1932 and now India’s flag carrier under Tata Sons ownership, operates a global network of domestic and international flights. In response to the accident, the airline has set up a dedicated passenger hotline (1800-5691-444), urged media to avoid contacting the hotline directly, said it is cooperating fully with investigators, and will issue further updates via X and its official website.
