An Air India Boeing 787-8 aircraft, registered as VT-NAC, returned to Hong Kong shortly after its departure on June 16. The flight was en route from Hong Kong International Airport to Delhi Indira Gandhi International Airport when it turned back due to a technical issue. The aircraft had reached an altitude of around 22,000 feet over the South China Sea before descending back to Hong Kong.

The incident occurred just days after another Air India 787-8 crash in Ahmedabad, which resulted in over 200 fatalities. Despite the recent tragedy, Air India assured that "the flight landed safely at Hong Kong and is undergoing checks as a matter of abundant precaution." The airline has arranged alternative flights for passengers and is providing necessary assistance.

Flight tracking data indicated that VT-NAC had been temporarily stored at Abu Dhabi Zayed International Airport earlier this month before returning to commercial service. As of now, the aircraft remains grounded in Hong Kong for further checks.

In response to the recent crash involving flight AI171 from Ahmedabad, India's Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) mandated detailed inspections of Air India's Dreamliner fleet. The Ministry of Civil Aviation confirmed that eight out of thirty-three Boeing 787s have undergone inspection so far.

The Indian Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau began investigating the crash on June 12 with assistance from the United States' National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB). A high-level committee is also set to conduct an independent inquiry starting June 16.
