David Neeleman Founder and CEO of Breeze Airways | Breeze Airways

Breeze Airways, which launched in 2021, has expanded its network and fleet significantly since its inception. The airline initially focused on connecting underserved communities with affordable flights to secondary airports across the United States. Breeze Airways describes itself as a "premium leisure carrier connecting underserved cities across the US."

In June 2021, Breeze's longest route was between Tampa and Tulsa, covering a distance of 839 nautical miles (1,553 kilometers). By June this year, the airline's longest route is transcontinental, linking airports on both coasts of the US.

David Neeleman, Founder and CEO of Breeze Airways, reflected on starting an airline during the pandemic: “Started flying our flights in May of 2021, which is just coming out of Covid. So I think I’d like to believe that we’re a better company today because we had to go through those challenges.”

The introduction of Airbus A220-300 aircraft has allowed Breeze to expand further. By June 2022, Breeze had increased its weekly departures from 35 to 200. The Richmond to San Francisco route became its longest at that time with a distance of 2,128 nautical miles (3,941 km).

In May 2023, Breeze began operating a new longest route from Rhode Island T.F. Green International Airport to Los Angeles International Airport at a distance of 2,253 nautical miles (4,172 km). Tom Doxey noted that “Breeze Airways looks for underserved routes where it can add non-stop flights.”

By June this year, Rhode Island to Los Angeles remains the longest route operated by Breeze Airways. Neeleman highlighted that about 86% of their routes have no direct competition.

Looking ahead, Breeze Airways could soon operate international routes following approval from the Department of Transportation (DOT) on June 6 for scheduled foreign air transportation under Open Skies agreements.

“The grant of authority allowing Breeze to operate to Open Skies countries is in the public interest," said Breeze Airways regarding their potential international expansion.
