Rick Deurloo President of Commercial Engines at Pratt & Whitney | Pratt & Whitney

Frontier Airlines has chosen Pratt & Whitney's GTF engines to power 91 of its Airbus A320neo aircraft. This follow-on order will increase the airline's total number of GTF-powered aircraft to 235, including those already delivered. Frontier Airlines and Pratt & Whitney have maintained a long-standing relationship since the airline's inception.

The announcement was made on June 16 in Paris, with the first of these new GTF-powered aircraft expected to be delivered from the fourth quarter of 2026. Frontier Airlines currently operates over 130 A320neo family aircraft, making it the largest operator of this type in the United States.

In addition to supplying engines, Pratt & Whitney will provide engine maintenance through a long-term EngineWise Comprehensive service agreement. The partnership between Frontier and Pratt & Whitney began in 1994 when Frontier started operations with Boeing 737-200 powered by JT8D engines.

Rick Deurloo, President of Commercial Engines at Pratt & Whitney, stated, “Four years ago, we welcomed Frontier Airlines to the Pratt & Whitney GTF family, and this selection demonstrates the airline's confidence in the GTF engine. With this latest order, Frontier will continue to realize the benefits of the most fuel-efficient engine for single-aisle aircraft, and we will continue to support Frontier and their operations in the coming decades.”

Frontier Airlines currently has a fleet that includes 135 A320neo family aircraft: 82 A320-200Ns with an average age of 5.8 years and 53 A321NXs averaging 1.4 years old. The rest comprises 21 A321-200s and seven A320-200s.

Pratt & Whitney’s PW1000G family is one option for advanced turbofan engines for the A320neo series alongside CFM International’s LEAP-1A. All future orders for Frontier’s fleet—comprising both current orders for new models like A321neos—will use PW1000 engines.

Frontier received its first GTF-powered A321neo in October 2022 and named it "Frederick the Bald Eagle" after Frederick Rentschler, founder of Pratt & Whitney.
