An Air India Boeing 787 Dreamliner crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad, bound for London Gatwick Airport. The aircraft transmitted its last signal at an altitude of approximately 625 feet. Reports indicate that the plane came down in a residential area near Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport.
Air India confirmed the incident, stating: "Flight AI171, operating Ahmedabad-London Gatwick, was involved in an incident today, 12 June 2025. At this moment, we are ascertaining the details and will share further updates at the earliest on http://airindia.com and on our X handle (https://x.com/airindia)."
The crash represents the first major accident involving a Boeing 787 Dreamliner. Initial reports varied regarding the number of people onboard, with estimates ranging from 133 to 242. According to Faiz Ahmed Kidwai, Chief of India's Directorate of Civil Aviation, there were 230 passengers and 12 crew members onboard.
