On June 12, Air India Flight 171, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner en route to London Gatwick Airport, crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad's Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. The crash resulted in the deaths of all but one of the 242 passengers and crew on board, as well as several individuals inside a medical school hostel.

Initial reports suggest that the airplane's flaps may not have been extended during takeoff, although some experts speculate a possible double engine failure. Authorities from India, the US, and the UK will conduct an investigation to determine the cause of the accident.

Boeing has faced scrutiny over safety and quality standards following previous incidents involving its aircraft. Notably, between March 2019 and December 2020, Boeing's 737 MAX was grounded worldwide after two fatal crashes. More recently, in January 2024, an Alaska Airlines flight experienced a door plug blowout on a Boeing 737 MAX 9.

Following the Air India incident, Boeing issued a statement through President and CEO Kelly Ortberg: “Our deepest condolences go out to the loved ones of the passengers and crew on board Air India Flight 171, as well as everyone affected in Ahmedabad. I have spoken with Air India Chairman N. Chandrasekaran to offer our full support.”

Boeing follows established protocols for air crash investigations as outlined by Annex 13 of the Convention on International Civil Aviation. This protocol restricts what information can be shared publicly until investigations are complete.

In recent years, other accidents involving Boeing aircraft include Jeju Air Flight 2216 in December 2024 and China Eastern Airlines Flight MU5735 in March 2022. Both incidents resulted in significant loss of life.

Boeing’s responses to these tragedies have been consistent with industry practices under Annex 13 guidelines. Investigations into these accidents are ongoing or pending further updates from respective aviation authorities.
