President Trump has initiated significant changes at the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) by removing Jennifer Abruzzo and Gwynne Wilcox, both of whom were appointed during Joe Biden's presidency. These actions are part of Trump's efforts to shift the balance of power at the NLRB away from union influence.

During his administration, President Biden made several appointments that were viewed as favorable to unions. Notably, he dismissed Peter Robb, Trump's previous general counsel for the NLRB, shortly after taking office in 2021. Biden then appointed Jennifer Abruzzo as general counsel and filled two board vacancies with Gwynne Wilcox and David Prouty, both associated with union backgrounds.

The National Right to Work Foundation has criticized these appointments and decisions made under Biden's administration. Mark Mix, President of the Foundation, commented on Trump's recent actions: “We hope that this signals the opening of a new chapter at the NLRB, where the agency will fulfill its statutory mandate to protect workers’ right to associate with unions if they choose but will equally defend their right to refrain from all union activity.”

Trump's decision aligns with arguments presented in legal cases supported by the National Right to Work Foundation. These cases challenge the structure of the NLRB and advocate for allowing presidential discretion in removing board members. Ariana Cortes and Logan Karam have filed a federal suit asserting that board members should be removable by the president based on constitutional principles.

Mark Mix praised Trump's move: “President Trump made an excellent and decisive move to protect the freedom of American workers. Abruzzo’s and Wilcox’s track records were devastating for independent-minded employees.” He also emphasized ongoing legal efforts needed to reverse what he views as damage done by previous NLRB decisions under Biden.
