With youth unemployment in South Africa reaching 62.4%, the logistics industry is emerging as a potential solution to this national challenge. The sector, driven by e-commerce and digital advancements, offers new career paths for young individuals.

Gregory Saffy, managing director for Sub-Saharan African Operations at FedEx, stated that logistics now provides diverse professional opportunities due to its evolution into a tech-enabled industry. “From supply chain analytics and IT systems integration to customer experience and compliance, logistics is evolving into a dynamic, tech-enabled industry that offers diverse professional avenues for South Africa’s youth,” he said.

Traditional roles such as drivers and packers remain essential but are increasingly supported by technology-driven processes. This transition opens up more technology-focused roles for young job seekers. Saffy emphasized the importance of digital capability in gaining competitive advantage within the sector: “Logistics isn’t what it used to be,” he said. “The real competitive advantage now lies in digital capability, especially in areas like data analytics and systems thinking."

In addition to IT roles, compliance and customs clearance are growing fields within logistics. A national customs clearance certification is being developed to provide individuals with recognized qualifications even if they lack a matric pass. "We’re seeing progress in the creation of a national customs clearance certification that will give individuals a recognised qualification," Saffy explained.

FedEx is actively participating in skills development by enrolling customs clerks into courses on freight forwarding and customs compliance. These programs focus on technical knowledge along with future-ready skills like digital literacy and critical thinking.

For those without formal education access, FedEx's Yes Learnerships offer an entry point through a 12-month program combining training with practical work experience. Since 2019, over 150 unemployed youths have participated, with more than 60 securing permanent positions afterward. “Our 12-month programme combines training, mentoring and practical work experience,” said Saffy.

Additionally, FedEx supports youth living with disabilities through a learnership program offering an NQF Level 4 certificate in business administration.

Saffy highlighted the significance of private sector investment in skills development: “Logistics is a gateway to global trade,” he noted. With appropriate support and training, South Africa's youth can succeed in this fast-paced environment.
