It is mandatory to shower without a bathing suit before swimming, and many facilities have communal showers, although some offer private cubicles. Those uncomfortable with public showering or those who identify as trans or non-binary can seek guidance from staff or check pool websites beforehand.
Removing shoes before entering locker rooms is another important custom to keep floors clean. Flip-flops or shower shoes are allowed if preferred over walking barefoot. Swimwear is required at all public pools and hot springs, though rentals may be available.
