Iceland's geothermal pools are a staple of the nation's culture, serving as places for exercise, socialization, and relaxation. These pools can be found both in urban centers like Reykjavík and in remote areas of the countryside. Visitors are welcomed by locals but must adhere to specific pool etiquette to respect local traditions.

A fundamental rule across all geothermal pools is showering before entering the water. This practice helps maintain cleanliness and reduces the need for chemicals in the water. It is mandatory to shower without a bathing suit before swimming, and many facilities have communal showers, although some offer private cubicles. Those uncomfortable with public showering or those who identify as trans or non-binary can seek guidance from staff or check pool websites beforehand.

Removing shoes before entering locker rooms is another important custom to keep floors clean. Flip-flops or shower shoes are allowed if preferred over walking barefoot. Swimwear is required at all public pools and hot springs, though rentals may be available.

Maintaining dry changing rooms is crucial; therefore, drying off after showering is necessary to prevent wet floors. Photography should be limited out of respect for others' privacy, especially avoiding photos in changing rooms or without consent.

An entry fee is standard at public swimming pools to support maintenance efforts, with costs varying between $5–12 USD typically. At more luxurious locations like Blue Lagoon or Sky Lagoon, fees may be higher due to premium services offered.

Pools serve as social spaces where loud behavior is discouraged; visitors should remain mindful of noise levels around others. While nudity in showers for hygiene purposes is expected, it is not permitted elsewhere within public pool areas.

Geothermal spas also follow these guidelines but may have specific rules regarding noise levels and photography depending on their environment. Drinking alcohol at most public baths isn't allowed except where swim-up bars are provided in modern spas.

Safety tips include staying hydrated while using hot springs and utilizing handrails when entering slippery areas due to algae presence—also recommended checking temperature warnings beforehand particularly important for pregnant women considering limiting time spent immersed within hotter waters accordingly supervising children consistently remains paramount during visits too
