On June 17, 2025, Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officers at Boston Logan International Airport discovered a firearm in a passenger's carry-on luggage. The Massachusetts state police confirmed that the item was an unloaded 9mm handgun. The gun belonged to a 29-year-old male from California, who was subsequently questioned and charged by authorities. The firearm has been taken into police custody.

This incident marks the ninth time this year that TSA has intercepted a firearm at Boston Logan Airport. While such occurrences can cause concern among travelers, they are often due to individuals misplacing their firearms or misunderstanding regulations. However, the consequences of bringing a firearm to an airport can be severe.

The TSA allows unloaded firearms to be transported only in checked luggage. Firearms must be placed inside a locked hard-sided container with a key accessible only to the passenger. Passengers must declare these items to the airline during check-in. Carrying guns with accessible ammunition is treated as carrying loaded firearms, and penalties for violations range from $3,000 to over $17,000 depending on circumstances.

Carrying guns in carry-ons without proper authorization leads to stiff fines and possible criminal referrals. Repeat offenders face higher penalties. Additionally, individuals with TSA Precheck will lose their status if found with firearms in their carry-ons.

The presence of firearms in airports causes significant disruptions and poses safety risks for passengers and staff alike. A security lane may be shut down during such incidents, leading to travel delays.

The TSA director for Massachusetts stated: "I strongly urge all gun owners to ensure they know where their firearms are before traveling."

Globally, regulations on carrying firearms on aircraft are set by the International Air Transport Association (IATA), with local jurisdictions making adjustments as needed. Generally, IATA prohibits firearms in carry-ons but allows them in checked baggage at the operator's discretion.

In the US and other countries, air marshals—federal law enforcement officers trained for commercial flight threats—are allowed to carry guns onboard flights. Additionally, under the Federal Flight Deck Officer program, qualified pilots may choose to undergo training and carry guns in cockpits for defense against hijackers.

For those traveling with firearms, TSA advises following the 'prepare, pack, and declare' rule: double-check requirements based on locality; ensure firearms are unloaded and packed in hard-sided boxes; declare them at check-in; and comply with both domestic and international regulations when flying abroad.
