A newly enhanced video circulating on social media may provide crucial insight into the cause of the Air India flight AI171 crash shortly after its departure from Ahmedabad on June 12. The 18-second footage, clearer than previous versions, captures the distinct sound of the aircraft’s Ram Air Turbine (RAT) deploying just before impact.

Experts highlight this detail as significant. The RAT is a small wind-powered turbine that emerges during extreme emergencies, designed to automatically deploy if an aircraft loses both engines or suffers a complete failure of electrical or hydraulic systems. On modern planes like the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, it serves as a last-resort system that most pilots never use.

In the case of AI171, aviation specialists indicate that the RAT's activation strongly suggests a catastrophic dual engine failure occurred seconds after takeoff. An expert explained, “It’s not designed for an airplane at 400 or 500 feet to lose all power,” but it provides minimal energy needed for flight and communication.

Once deployed, the RAT draws energy from the aircraft’s forward motion. Depending on the type of aircraft, it powers hydraulic systems directly or generates electricity to maintain essential avionics. These include critical instruments like altitude and airspeed displays, flight controls such as ailerons and rudders, navigation tools including GPS, and communication equipment for radio contact.

The RAT can deploy automatically in emergencies; pilots also have manual control over its engagement from the cockpit. A historical example illustrating its importance is US Airways flight 1549—known as the “Miracle on the Hudson”—where after losing both engines due to bird strikes in 2009, the RAT sustained vital systems allowing Captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger to safely ditch in the Hudson River with all passengers surviving.

For investigators analyzing AI171's tragic incident, this new video offers an early technical lead by suggesting total power loss—a rare and concerning scenario for such advanced aircraft. With the Cockpit Voice Recorder now recovered from the wreckage, a preliminary report detailing events leading to this tragedy is expected within weeks.
