A recent proposal by Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) in the TRAN committee aims to amend the enforcement of Passenger Rights regulation (2023/0437). The amendment suggests that passengers should have the right to bring an additional 100cm cabin bag at no extra charge. This change could lead to everyone paying for a service not all travelers require.
The International Air Transport Association (IATA) conducted a poll in April, which revealed that affordability is a top priority for air travelers, second only to safety. According to IATA's survey, 72% of travelers prefer paying the lowest possible price for their tickets and opting for additional services as needed. The survey also indicated that about 30% of people currently pay to bring a bag on board. If the proposed amendment is adopted, it may result in a minority being subsidized by the majority.
