The Salt Lake City International Airport's $5.2 billion reconstruction project is nearing completion, with the final phases expected to conclude in 2026. The airport renovation includes adding 16 gates to Concourse B, bringing the total number of gates to 94.

Michael Williams, who served as the program director for this extensive project, passed away recently. His death has motivated the construction team to fulfill his vision and complete the renovation according to his plans. Brian Stetson has taken over as director and emphasized that they are "adapting the system for anticipated growth."

The project spans four overlapping phases. The first phase was completed in late 2020, involving significant work on a central terminal building and sections of Concourses A and B. Phase two saw the demolition of the old airport structure and began constructing a central tunnel by 2023. By late 2024, phase three's major components, including a connecting tunnel and plaza at Concourse B, were open to public use.

As part of phase four, five new gates are set to open in autumn alongside lounges for Delta Air Lines and American Express. All areas are scheduled for opening by October 2026, though some paving will continue into early 2027.

To address seismic concerns due to its location on a dry lake bed with high water tables, measures such as drilling holes filled with stones have been implemented to prevent liquefaction during earthquakes.

Artistic elements such as "The River" ceiling feature in a central tunnel pay homage to historical water bodies once on site. Artist Gordon Huether also created "The Canyon," which mimics Northern Lights patterns through an innovative sculpture design.

Stetson expressed dedication towards fulfilling Williams' legacy: “We said we have a commitment... We do it for Mike.”
