The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) requires the air traffic control (ATC) tower at Austin Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) to have 60 controllers. However, as reported by CBS, the current staffing is only 29 controllers, which is less than half of what is needed.
Congressman Doggett has been working with the FAA to address this issue, especially after six near-misses occurred in the airport's controlled space. Despite his efforts, the situation has not improved significantly. Although a federal hiring freeze does not apply to ATC positions, staffing levels remain critically low.
In February 2023, a Southwest Airlines Boeing 737 and a FedEx 767 freighter came within 150–170 feet of each other at AUS. This incident was investigated by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), which found that ATC had mistakenly assumed that the Southwest plane would have departed before the FedEx plane landed on the same runway. A Southwest crew member also failed to notify the controller of a delay. Earlier this year, due to capacity limits caused by understaffing, the FAA imposed a Ground Stop (GS) on AUS for 90 minutes to ensure passenger safety.
