On June 19, reports emerged that Dr. Doreen Benary, an emergency pediatrician from New York, has filed a lawsuit against Singapore Airlines. The legal action follows an allergic reaction she experienced during a flight from Frankfurt to New York after allegedly being served shrimp despite informing the cabin crew of her shellfish allergy.

The incident forced the plane to make an emergency landing in Paris for Dr. Benary to receive medical treatment at two facilities. She claims the airline's negligence caused her significant pain, mental distress, and financial losses. Shellfish allergies can lead to severe and life-threatening reactions.

The complaint states that the crew acknowledged their mistake and apologized. Dr. Benary's lawsuit highlights potential issues with airlines' responsibilities toward passengers with medical conditions. If proven negligent, Singapore Airlines could be liable for damages.

Singapore Airlines commented on the matter: “Singapore Airlines is unable to comment on matters before the court.”

This situation underscores the importance of airlines understanding health risks posed by such incidents and ensuring passenger safety. The current Federal Aviation Administration guidelines do not mandate carrying tools like EpiPens on flights, though passengers are advised to bring them.

For Singapore Airlines, this incident poses reputational risks as it involves a business-class passenger experiencing a traumatic event due to alleged negligence. The airline must address these concerns to maintain its service quality reputation among high-spending travelers.
