Passengers at New York JFK Airport on June 3 witnessed an unusual sight on the taxiways: the Beta ALIA CX300, an electric aircraft. This aircraft, with its distinctive helicopter-like body and propeller at the back, represents a potential shift in aviation due to its low carbon footprint, reduced operating costs, and quieter experience.

Aviation International News reported that the CX300 flew from Long Island MacArthur Airport to JFK in 45 minutes at a cruising speed of 135 knots. The flight's electricity cost was $7, compared to an estimated $160 for fuel if using a helicopter. Beta Technologies is among several companies developing small electric aircraft, demonstrating their feasibility with this flight.

Beta Technologies is working on two versions of its electric aircraft. The ALIA A250 is a vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) variant with four lifting motors alongside a standard in-house electric motor. The ALIA CX300 lacks these lift motors but shares other features. The A250 aims to replace helicopters while the CX300 targets competitors like Cessna Caravans.

Both models have maximum speeds of 153 knots and are rated for IFR operations. They are designed for single-pilot operation and can seat five passengers or be configured for cargo use with 200 cubic feet of space. Although this is less than a Cessna Caravan offers, the lower operational costs make them attractive.

For VTOL variants, Beta claims energy costs of $28 per hour compared to a Bell 407's fuel costs and an 84% reduction in carbon emissions. For conventional variants like the ALIA CX300, energy costs are projected at $18 per hour versus $347 per hour for a Cessna 208's fuel costs, along with a promised 75% reduction in carbon emissions.

Electric aircraft offer solutions for decarbonizing aviation by replacing fuel-powered engines with electric motors. Pipistrel Vellis Electro was the first fully certified production plane using electric propulsion in 2020. Eviation Alice took its first flight in 2022 featuring rear-mounted propellers; however, development has paused as more funding is sought.

Heart Aerospace from Sweden is developing the ES-30 hybrid-electric commuter plane using turboprop engines for takeoff and long-range flights while relying on electric motors otherwise. It has secured significant orders from airlines including United Airlines and Air Canada.

Electric planes promise significant reductions in carbon emissions and cost savings but face challenges due to batteries' lower energy density compared to jet fuel. Despite being heavier and less powerful than traditional aircraft, they show promise for short commuter routes like those flown by the ES-30 and ALIA CX300.
