The Pratt & Whitney PW1100G engine, part of the P&W GTF series used on the A320neo, has been updated to the GTF Advantage (GTF-A). Announced in December 2021, this new variant promises enhanced fuel efficiency, durability, and improved thrust at high-altitude airports.

Tom Pelland, GTF chief engineer at Pratt & Whitney, claims that the GTF-A will provide "8% greater thrust at hot and high airports, and 4% better thrust at sea level." This update builds upon previous sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) testing with aims for 100% SAF compatibility.

Pratt & Whitney has achieved these advancements by optimizing airflow control between turbine and seals, lowering compressor temperatures, and utilizing durable coatings. Risk Deurloo, President of Commercial Engines for Pratt & Whitney, remarked: “GTF engines already offer the lowest fuel consumption and CO2 emissions for single-aisle aircraft. The GTF Advantage engine extends that lead.”

The original GTF engine introduced geared technology to commercial aviation. This innovation allows turbines and fans to rotate at different speeds through a gearbox, offering benefits in fuel consumption and noise reduction.

Despite initial challenges faced by the PW1100G series such as inflight failures traced to low-pressure turbine issues—prompting engine replacements—the company remains optimistic about future prospects. Neil Mitchill from RTX noted plans to remove hundreds of engines due to ongoing concerns.

The GTF-A is expected to begin deliveries later in 2025 following FAA certification. As of February 2025, over 2,200 GTF-powered aircraft have been delivered globally. Deurloo commented on these milestones coinciding with Pratt & Whitney's centennial celebration: “With this certification... it’s fitting we mark these milestones in 2025.”

Pratt & Whitney aims for the GTF-A to rewrite its history with geared turbofans by overcoming past reliability issues while maintaining operational advantages.
