The Run the Runway event at Chicago Executive Airport in Wheeling, Illinois, marks its 10th anniversary on June 28. Open to the public, the event features a 5K runway run, a one-mile walk, and a Kids Dash. Participants will also have opportunities to view working aircraft up close and take photos with characters like Spiderman and Elsa.

Proceeds from the event support Chicago's Leading Edge, a local chapter of Women in Aviation International, along with two other organizations: Chicago Executive Pilots’ Association and The Ninety-Nines, Inc. These funds provide scholarships and career-building support for young women pursuing careers in aviation.

“With the support of fabulous sponsors, like the Chicago Executive Airport, our national organization provides around one million dollars in scholarship money to our young members each year,” said Laurie Mulé, Vice President of Chicago’s Leading Edge. Mulé earned her pilot’s license in 2020 and mentors young women interested in flying. “Our organization helps provide flight training, education, and we were thrilled to send ten young women to aviation conferences in early 2025. Women need other women to boost them up.”

Two scholarship recipients from Chicago’s Leading Edge are Grace Kohlert and Lily Fifer.

Grace Kohlert recently obtained her dispatcher certificate and multi-engine rating after graduating cum laude from Lewis University with a degree in aviation administration. She began flight training at age 15 and was flying solo by age 16. Currently working as a flight instructor at Fly America at Dekalb Airport, she hopes to fly corporate planes or for a major airline someday.

Lily Fifer is studying flight operations and aviation management at the University of Dubuque while minoring in business. She has achieved her pilot’s license and flies three to five times weekly when not attending school or working. Her future goals include obtaining additional certifications such as CFI (Certified Flight Instructor), CFII (Certified Flight Instructor Instrument), MEI (Multi-Engine Instructor), followed by bush flying in Alaska.

Attendees are encouraged to visit the booth of Chicago’s Leading Edge during this year's Run the Runway event to learn more about their initiatives. The organization aims to double its scholarship recipients for next year's Women in Aviation National Conference.
