FedEx has announced the passing of its founder and executive chairman, Frederick W. Smith. In a message to FedEx team members, CEO Raj Subramaniam expressed deep sadness over Smith's death earlier today.

"Fred was more than just the pioneer of an industry and the founder of our great company," said Subramaniam. "He was the heart and soul of FedEx – its PSP culture, values, integrity, and spirit."

Smith was described as a mentor to many within the company and a source of inspiration. He is also remembered as a father, grandfather, husband, Marine, and friend. Subramaniam asked for thoughts and prayers for the Smith family during this difficult time.

The FedEx community is encouraged to support one another as they process this loss. "As we begin to process this tremendous loss," continued Subramaniam, "it is important that we take care of one another and demonstrate the passion and compassion that Fred embodied every day."

Subramaniam noted that in the coming days and weeks, there would be opportunities to honor Smith's memory and legacy.
