The commercial aviation sector recently marked a significant milestone as SkyTeam, the world's third-oldest airline alliance, celebrated its 25th anniversary. Established in 2000 following the Star Alliance and oneworld, SkyTeam has expanded from an initial group of four airlines to nearly 20 full members.
SkyTeam was founded on June 22, 2000, after a meeting in New York City involving Aeromexico, Air France, Delta Air Lines, and Korean Air. At its inception, the alliance offered "6,402 daily flights to 451 destinations in 98 countries." Today, it comprises 18 airlines serving "more than 945 destinations across 145 countries," with a combined loyalty membership of approximately 235 million.
Andrés Conesa, Chair of SkyTeam and CEO of Aeromexico, remarked on the occasion: "SkyTeam’s success lies in the strength of its partnerships and a shared vision to put the customer at the center of the travel experience. Over the past two decades, I’ve had the privilege of witnessing SkyTeam grow into a truly global network expanding our reach, deepening collaboration, and enhancing the journey for millions of customers around the world."
