Iberia has announced a new temporary service using the Airbus A321XLR from Madrid to Santo Domingo. This route, set to begin on October 2, will be the airline's longest by distance for this aircraft model but not by block time. The flights will operate twice weekly until October 23.

Historically, Iberia has used widebody aircraft such as the Airbus A330 for its Santo Domingo route. However, the introduction of the A321XLR marks a shift to narrowbody operations for this Caribbean destination. The decision may reflect lower demand during October or planned maintenance for the A330.

The A321XLR offers 182 seats, with a configuration of 14 in business class and 168 in economy. Iberia currently operates three XLRs and expects five more by mid-2026. According to Iberia's June 2025 investor relations document, the real-world range of these aircraft is approximately 3,920 nautical miles.

This range is less than Airbus' advertised capability of 4,700 nautical miles due to various operational factors that affect real-world performance. Despite this limitation, Madrid to Santo Domingo at 3,617 nautical miles remains within reach.

Other routes likely to see future deployment of the A321XLR include Philadelphia and Toronto. Additionally, routes to Recife and Fortaleza in Brazil are possible thanks to this new aircraft model.
