Delta Air Lines is expanding its long-haul routes from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport with the addition of flights to Barcelona and Rome, set to begin next summer. The new daily service to Rome Fiumicino Leonardo da Vinci Airport will start on May 6, followed by the launch of flights to Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat Airport on May 7.

Both routes will be serviced by Airbus A330-900neo aircraft, featuring Delta One suites, Premium Select recliners, Comfort+ extra-legroom economy seats, and standard coach seats. This expansion is part of Delta's ongoing strategy in Seattle, where it has introduced 28 new markets over the past decade and now operates nearly 180 peak-day departures.

The announcement coincides with Alaska Airlines' plan to introduce its first European route from Seattle to Rome next summer. "With the addition of Rome and Barcelona, we'll serve eight of the top 10 long-haul international destinations from Seattle," said Paul Baldoni, Delta's senior vice president of network planning.

Delta and Alaska have been in competition since ending their codeshare alliance in 2017. Both airlines are enhancing their offerings at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport as they vie for market share in the Pacific Northwest.

Alaska Airlines aims to grow globally after acquiring Hawaiian Airlines last year. It plans to add at least 12 long-haul destinations from Seattle by 2030. Meanwhile, Delta continues its efforts with local marketing campaigns and enhanced customer experiences.

"We compete with a lot of carriers in a lot of different places," Baldoni noted. "What we focus on is how do we make the customer experience the best that it possibly can be."

Tickets for Delta's new routes are expected to go on sale by June 30.
