Airbus is reportedly finalizing a significant aircraft order valued at over $2 billion with China Airlines, the flag carrier of Taiwan and a member of SkyTeam. The deal includes both narrowbody and widebody aircraft from Airbus, marking another major sale for the European manufacturer following its successful run at the 2025 Paris Air Show.

China Airlines has committed to acquiring 13 Airbus planes, split between five A350-900 widebodies and eight A321neo narrowbodies. Reuters reports that five units of the A321neo will be sourced from Air Lease Corporation (ALC) at a cost of $240 million, with negotiations ongoing for the remaining three. The total cost for the A350-900s could reach up to $1.965 billion, though leasing them could reduce this figure to $1.148 billion.

Benoît de Saint-Exupéry, Executive Vice President for Sales of Commercial Aircraft at Airbus, commented on China Airlines' continued investment in Airbus technology: "As an early adopter of the A350-900, China Airlines has played a pioneering role in embracing cutting-edge aviation technology."

The decision by China Airlines to expand its fleet with more Airbus aircraft comes amid delays in deliveries from Boeing's 787 'Dreamliner' series. The airline has pending orders for 18 Boeing 787-9s and six 787-10s but has had to postpone retiring older planes due to these setbacks.

Earlier this year, China Airlines finalized an order for ten larger Airbus A350-1000 variants, confirming plans disclosed last December to deploy these jets on routes to Europe and North America.

Meanwhile, Starlux Airlines also made headlines during the Paris Air Show by ordering ten A350-1000s. Deliveries are expected to start in 2031.

Currently, China Airlines operates a fleet that includes 17 examples of the Airbus A321neo, with an average age of just over two years. Its existing fleet of Airbus A350-900s averages nearly eight years old across its active aircraft.
